Frequently Asked Questions

Evaluation FAQs

  • How do I prepare for the initial evaluation?

After selecting a date and time for the initial evaluation you will receive a confirmation email that contains general evaluation information and required paperwork to complete prior to your appointment. This will include information on attendance policies, HIPAA, and paperwork that will provide us with consent to evaluate and treat your child. We ask that you complete and email back the ‘Child Intake’ and ‘Pre-Evaluation Feeding’(feeding evaluations only) forms prior to your initial evaluation. This allows us to review your child’s medical history so that we may better understand your concerns and reasoning for seeking an evaluation. If you are unable to send it back to us via email prior to the evaluation, please bring all completed paperwork with you to the initial evaluation appointment.

  • What can I expect during the initial evaluation?

Your evaluating therapist will review any additional information that was not covered in the initial medical history on the intake forms. We will then formally or informally assess your child’s speech-language and/or feeding and address any additional concerns you may have. It is important to note that in certain instances we may use standardized testing that consists mainly of  parent reports. This often applies to our younger population who may not perform consistently in a new environment with an unfamiliar clinician. Given we are a pediatric practice, we regularly use play based assessments as well. Based on our observation, we may make additional outside referrals if necessary (i.e. occupational therapy, physical therapy, neurology etc.).

  • What to bring for an initial feeding evaluation?

If your child is coming to Creating Voices to address feeding concerns, please be prepared to bring food/drinks to the initial evaluation and therapy sessions, as we do not provide food. We will do our best to have your child trial foods in our evaluation, however, we will also discuss responses you see at home. For infant feeding concerns, please bring various bottles trialed, expressed breast milk or formula, pacifiers, etc. For concerns regarding purees and solids, please bring a small quantity of preferred foods, and non-preferred foods and textures for us to observe a typical response to both.

  • How long is an initial evaluation?

We allot 1.5 hours, however, sometimes evaluation appointments are shorter based on the child and family needs. We want to ensure we get the best overall picture of your child and provide you with any additional time you may need or want for questions or problem-solving. If therapy is recommended, we will discuss scheduling times, and frequency via email after the assessment.

Therapy FAQs

  • Are parents in the session?

This varies from patient to patient regarding their specific goals, engagement with the therapist, and their overall therapy needs. Your therapist will guide you on the most beneficial plan for your child and family. Children often perform differently with parents present in the room, and in order for the therapist to gain complete engagement with the child, it is sometimes best for the parents to be out of the session. This can be particularly true with young patients and feeding patients.

  • How long will my child be in speech-language and/or feeding therapy?

There is honestly not a clear-cut answer to this question at the beginning of therapy, as there are variable factors from patient to patient that are going to impact progress and frequency of therapy. Your treating therapist will provide you with updates regarding your child's progress and anticipated duration of therapy. In some cases, episodic care may be recommended, which includes taking periodic breaks from therapy. We typically see the most progress when families attempt to work patiently and cooperatively with their child at home daily with home programs provided by their therapist. If there is a plateau in progress, or we and the parent feel there would be more optimal progress with another provider, we will make appropriate referrals at that time.

  • How do I pay for therapy?

We will send you a text link via the HIPAA-secure application called IVY at the end of your initial evaluation. IVY is a simple way to upload a card on file to pay for the evaluation and/or therapy sessions. We accept debit card, credit card, HSA, or FSA cards via the IVY app.

  • Is there anything I shouldn't bring to therapy?

Please kindly leave snacks and pacifiers at home or in the car. They often interfere with participation in therapy activities, are a distraction, and decrease the child’s ability to communicate during the session.

  • Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We are in network with BlueCross BlueShield, United HealthCare, and Scott and White Health Plan.

  • Do you accept private pay/out of network providers?

For out of network patients, we provide you with a HICF form (medical claim form) at the end of each month for you to submit to your insurance provider to be applied toward your out of network benefits.

  • What ages do you serve?

We are a pediatric practice primarily treating infants to school-age children. We treat infants for feeding concerns. Children that are 15-18 months of age often begin speech therapy to address early language concerns.

  • Do you offer home or school visits?

At this time, therapy is only provided in our offices located at 7859 Walnut Hill Ln. Suite #200.

  • Where are your offices located?

We are located at the corner of Walnut Hill and 75 in the Preston Hollow Village shopping center. Our offices are located within Pediatric Associates of Dallas (PAD), located on the second level of the parking garage. Our office is on the blue side of PAD, however, you will park where there is an orange entrance and doors by a staircase and elevator. We ask that you text 214-530-0017 when you arrive. We will then greet you at the glass doors by the elevator of the orange entrance of the building. We will walk you straight to our office to avoid the waiting area and to come to our office. If we do not answer immediately, it is because we are concluding with our prior patient. Thank you for your patience.
